CDCP coverage is broader than most people expect, but it has limits and a few services need approval first. Here is the practical version.
Covered at a dental hygienist
- Oral exams and assessments
- Scaling (cleaning) and polishing, within yearly unit limits
- Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) for gum disease
- Fluoride treatment
- Dental sealants
- Dental X-rays
Covered at a dentist
- Fillings
- Extractions
- Root canals
- Crowns, dentures and partial dentures (some need pre-authorization)
- Emergency care
Not covered
- Teeth whitening and other cosmetic services
- Implants
- Orthodontics, except limited cases starting in 2025 with pre-approval
- Sealants and night guards
Frequency limits
The plan sets how often each service is paid for, for example one exam and a set number of scaling units per year. If you need more because of gum disease, your provider can request pre-authorization.
Your share
Depending on adjusted family net income, the plan pays 100%, 60% or 40% of the CDCP fee. You pay the rest at the visit. Providers may also charge any difference between their usual fee and the plan fee, so ask for an estimate first.
