Most mouthwashes mask bad breath for twenty minutes. A few actually neutralize it. None of them fix the cause. Here is how to choose, and what to do first.

Ingredients that work

Ingredients that make it worse

Alcohol. It gives a strong initial burn, then dries the mouth, and dry mouth breeds the bacteria you are trying to control. Choose alcohol-free.

Why mouthwash alone fails

Persistent bad breath comes from bacteria in gum pockets, on the back of the tongue, and in tartar. Rinsing cannot reach into a gum pocket or remove tartar. That is why the fix is a professional cleaning, daily flossing and tongue scraping, with mouthwash as the finishing touch.

A routine that works

  1. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  2. Floss or use interdental brushes every day
  3. Scrape the back of the tongue each morning
  4. Rinse with an alcohol-free zinc or CPC mouthwash
  5. Drink water through the day; treat dry mouth if you have it
  6. Professional cleaning every three to six months

If breath is still bad after a cleaning and this routine, the cause may be tonsils, sinuses or reflux, and your physician is the next stop.
