Since the Canadian Dental Care Plan launched, thousands of Edmontonians have had their first professional cleaning in years. One thing many members do not realize: you can use your coverage at an independent dental hygienist, and you do not need to see a dentist first.
Who qualifies
Canadian residents who have filed their taxes, have no access to dental insurance through an employer, pension or private plan, and have an adjusted family net income under $90,000. Seniors, children and adults with the Disability Tax Credit were enrolled first; the plan has since expanded to all eligible ages.
What the plan covers at a hygienist
- Oral exam and assessment
- Scaling and polishing (cleaning)
- Scaling and root planing for gum disease
- Fluoride treatment
- Dental sealants
- Dental X-rays
Whitening and other cosmetic services are not covered.
What you pay
The plan pays 100% of its fee for family income under $70,000, 60% between $70,000 and $79,999, and 40% between $80,000 and $89,999. You pay the rest at the visit. Providers may also charge the difference between their fee and the CDCP fee; at Yours Dental Hygiene we tell you your exact co-payment before treatment starts.
What to bring
Your CDCP member card or welcome letter from Sun Life, government photo ID and your co-payment if you have one. If you are not sure your coverage has started, call us and we can check with Sun Life before you come in.
How to apply
Apply online at the Government of Canada CDCP page or by phone through Service Canada. You need a filed tax return and your Social Insurance Number. Coverage starts on the date in your welcome letter, so book after that date.
We are open seven days a week, 9am to 9pm, in southeast Edmonton. Call (825) 402-6111 and mention CDCP.
