What Is Periodontal Therapy?

Nearly half of adults over 30 have some form of periodontal disease, and most do not know it because it rarely hurts. It starts as gingivitis, where plaque irritates the gum, and progresses to periodontitis, where bacteria below the gumline destroy the bone that holds your teeth.

Periodontal therapy Edmonton at Yours Dental Hygiene is a structured program: assessment, treatment of the infected areas, and a maintenance schedule that keeps it from coming back.

The Program

Assess, Treat, Maintain

We start with a full periodontal charting: six measurements around every tooth, bleeding points, recession and mobility, plus X-rays if needed. That gives us a map of exactly where the disease is. Treatment is scaling and root planing in the affected areas with a complimentary numbing mouthwash, and freezing if required. Then we re-measure at six weeks and set your maintenance interval.

You see your own numbers before and after, so you know the treatment is working.

Stages

Gingivitis vs Periodontitis

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum only. It is reversible with a thorough cleaning and better home care. Periodontitis means the infection has reached the bone. It cannot be reversed, but it can be stopped, and stopping it early can mean the difference between keeping a tooth and losing it.

Risk goes up with smoking, diabetes, pregnancy, some medications, stress and a family history of gum disease.

Why It Matters Beyond Your Mouth

Untreated gum disease is linked to conditions elsewhere in the body. Research connects chronic periodontal inflammation with:

Treating your gums is part of looking after your overall health, not just your smile.

What Your Maintenance Interval Depends On

After therapy, most patients come every three to four months instead of six. We set the interval based on:

1 2 at Yours Dental Hygiene Edmonton
How deep the pockets were
2 2 at Yours Dental Hygiene Edmonton
How much bleeding remains at re-evaluation
3 1 at Yours Dental Hygiene Edmonton
Smoking or diabetes
4 1 at Yours Dental Hygiene Edmonton
How well home care is going
5 1 at Yours Dental Hygiene Edmonton
Previous history of tooth loss
Maintenance visits are shorter and less expensive than treatment, and they are what keeps the disease from returning.

What to Expect During Periodontal Therapy

Any of these signs deserve a periodontal check:

Periodontal charting is included in a new patient assessment, and most insurance plans and the CDCP cover it.

Questions People Often Ask

Is periodontal therapy painful?
We use a complimentary numbing mouthwash, with freezing available if required, so treatment is comfortable. Gums may be tender for a day or two. Maintenance visits rarely need it.
Active treatment is usually two to four visits over a month, then a re-evaluation. After that, maintenance visits are about an hour every three to four months.
Most cases respond well to hygienist-led therapy. If pockets stay deep after treatment, or you have advanced bone loss, we refer you to a periodontist and continue your maintenance alongside them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Periodontal Therapy

Can a dental hygienist treat gum disease?
Yes. Registered dental hygienists are the primary providers of non-surgical periodontal therapy in Alberta. We assess, treat and maintain, and refer to a periodontist for surgical cases.
Most plans cover scaling and root planing units, periodontal charting and maintenance visits. The Canadian Dental Care Plan covers scaling for eligible members. We bill directly.
Yes, if plaque is allowed to build up again. That is why the maintenance interval matters. Patients who keep their maintenance appointments rarely have a relapse.
Periodontitis is controlled rather than cured. Lost bone does not grow back on its own, but the disease can be stopped and stable for decades with maintenance.
A cleaning tailored for someone who has had gum disease: more time below the gumline, re-measuring of pockets, and checking the areas that were treated. Usually every three to four months.
Why do my gums bleed even though I brush?
Brushing removes plaque above the gumline; it cannot reach tartar that has hardened below it. Bleeding is the gum reacting to that hidden tartar. Only professional scaling removes it.
No. Mouthwash reduces bacteria on the surface but does not remove tartar. It can help after treatment as part of home care.
Gingivitis improves with excellent brushing and daily interdental cleaning. Periodontitis needs professional treatment below the gum. Home care keeps it under control afterwards.
Bone loss continues slowly and silently until teeth loosen. Treatment at that point is more complex and more expensive, and some teeth cannot be saved.
Yes. Pregnancy gingivitis is very common, and treating it is safe and recommended. Tell us you are pregnant so we adapt the appointment.
